Yo,verde: A Modern Twist on Olive Oil Packaging

Breaking the Mold with Antonio Cuenca's Innovative Design

Yo,verde produces early harvest olive oil collected in the month of October. The family behind this brand, who are both farmers and pharmacists, wanted their packaging to reflect the fusion of these two disciplines with an iconic and modern design that defies traditional olive oil packaging norms.

In response to this brief, designer Antonio Cuenca embarked on a quest to find the perfect visual formula that would unite the essence of the olive oil and pharmaceutical sectors. The result? A bottle that resembles a classic syrup pot, incorporating three key elements: the bottle's appearance, the name, and the logo.

The design team aimed to simplify the message, opting for a clean and minimalist approach. The bottle, painted in white, features a simple shape reminiscent of a syrup bottle, complete with a sleek and unadorned stopper. The product's name, "Yo,verde," justifies the vibrant green color of the oil inside. The logo, constructed from a pharmaceutical cross forming a pixelated heart, adds a touch of visual intrigue. These elements seamlessly integrate and reinforce one another, bringing coherence to the overall concept.

What sets Yo,verde apart from other olive oil packaging designs is its strong emphasis on health and its striking green color against a white background. The combination of naming, graphic design, and finishing work together to create a powerful and consistent product that breaks away from traditional olive oil packaging conventions.

The realization of this design involved the use of glass as the primary material. The bottle is painted in white and printed in two colors, further enhancing its visual appeal. With a capacity of 500ml, the bottle boasts rounded shapes and measures 20cm in height and 7.5cm in width.

Functionality was also a key consideration in the design process. The bottle's compact size makes it easy to handle, while the screw cap ensures a non-refillable and anti-drip experience, allowing for effortless pouring. Yo,verde Extra Virgin Olive Oil is exclusively available in pharmacies, health stores, and through their own website.

The Yo,verde project commenced in November 2016 and was completed in February 2017 in Úbeda. Throughout the design process, the team faced the challenge of creating a new visual language for the olive oil industry, one that would be fresh, unconventional, and appealing to health-conscious consumers worldwide.

Antonio Cuenca's design for Yo,verde is a synthesis exercise inspired by classic syrup jars. The name itself serves as the product's insignia, justifying the green color of the oil contained within. The logo, featuring a pixelated heart formed by a pharmaceutical cross, adds a touch of intrigue. The overall design is clean, simple, and associated with health and well-being.

Yo,verde's innovative packaging design has garnered recognition and acclaim. In 2020, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
